Netgear was founded in 1996 as a manufacturer of computer networking equipment and other computer hardware. Netgear was incorporated on January the 8th 1996 as a business that was controlled by a larger entity; the larger entity being Bay Networks.

Netgear was used to focus on providing networking solutions for small businesses and homes. In August 1998 Nortel, as part of its acquisition of Bay Networks, brought Netgear and the situation stayed this way until Netgear finally became independent in February 2002.
